UFO WARRIOR DAI APOLON – Il Cavaliere del Football Spaziale

Prodotta dalla Eiken nel 1976, la serie segue le vicende di Takeshi, un giovane orfano e giocatore di football americano che scopre di essere il principe ereditario del pianeta Apolon. Grazie all’Energia Chiave tatuata sul suo petto, Takeshi può comandare il potente Diapolon, un colossale robot nato dall’unione di tre unità distinte: Hedda (la testa), Trangu (il tronco) e Legger (le gambe). La serie è celebre per il design del mecha, chiaramente ispirato alle protezioni del football americano, e per il singolare processo di “crescita” in cui il pilota si ingigantisce fisicamente per fondersi con il robot.

Il merchandising della serie fu realizzato dalla storica BULLMARK, che produsse modelli diventati leggendari per l’incredibile peso e la quantità di metallo utilizzato. Il pezzo più iconico è senza dubbio il Diapolon DX (Gasshin), che permetteva la scomposizione e ricomposizione dei tre robot. Oggi, questi modelli Bullmark sono tra i più ricercati e costosi nel panorama del collezionismo vintage: un esemplare completo e in condizioni “mint” (pari al nuovo) può superare agevolmente i mille euro, rappresentando un vero investimento per gli appassionati.

La storia inizia nell’orfanotrofio La casa del Cielo blu, dove vivono Takeshi e i suoi amici Miki, Goro e Matsuo. Takeshi è anche un brillante giocatore di football americano. Durante un forte temporale egli viene colpito da una gigantesca lama di energia che gli trafigge il petto. Tra le nuvole si scorge la figura di un cavaliere su un destriero alato (il dio Apolon), che rapisce Takeshi e i suoi amici. I ragazzi si risvegliano in una base dove trovano uno scienziato, Labi, che rivela a Takeshi la sua vera origine: in realtà lui è il Dai Apolon, figlio del re Apolon, sovrano del pianeta omonimo. Labi spiega anche che il sovrano è stato ucciso anni prima dal popolo invasore dei Dazaan, che si sono impadroniti del cuore di energia. Il cuore di energia è formato da due pezzi, il dispositivo di assorbimento e l’energia chiave, quest’ultima messa al sicuro nel petto di Takeshi poco prima che il padre venisse ucciso, sotto un tatuaggio a forma di sole. L’energia chiave non solo aziona il cuore di energia, ma può sprigionare una forza speciale sfruttando i raggi solari, grazie alla quale Takeshi potrà assumere il comando del potente robot Diapolon per respingere i Dazaan che vogliono occupare anche la Terra e riprendere l’energia chiave. Il Diapolon è il risultato dell’unione di tre robot minori: il robot Edda costituisce la testa, Trangu il tronco e infine Legga l’addome e le gambe. Dopo l’unione Takeshi, grazie all’energia chiave, subisce un doloroso processo di crescita del corpo, assumendo le stesse dimensioni del Diapolon che diventa una sorta di armatura, dalle sembianze di un giocatore di football americano. Il punto debole di Diapolon, però, è che la sua energia dipende dalla presenza dei raggi solari. Takeshi e i suoi amici, messi alla guida di aerei di supporto, iniziano così una guerra senza quartiere contro i Dazaan, capeggiati dal comandante Gyranic, dal capitano Ydo e dall’infido Gumez, che sono alla ricerca dell’energia chiave. Nelle ultime puntate si scopre che la madre di Takeshi non è morta ma è prigioniera sul pianeta Dazaan. Labi installa in Edda una speciale apparecchiatura grazie alla quale Diapolon può viaggiare nello spazio aperto. Salutati gli amici, Takeshi parte così alla volta del pianeta Dazaan, che si scopre avvolto da uno strato di gas che potrebbe privare il robot dell’energia solare. Diapolon si libera dalle trappole preparate per fermarlo e affronta quindi un mostro molto potente che lo mette alle corde, questo anche per la mancanza di energia solare. Takeshi riesce comunque a raggiungere la madre, ma per salvarla il ragazzo dovrà azionare un congegno a detonatore che farebbe esplodere tutto il pianeta. La regina Apolon rifiuta di essere salvata e propone al figlio di usare il cuore di energia per far rinascere la vegetazione su quel pianeta martoriato. Diapolon deve scontrarsi ancora con il mostro Dazaan, ma stavolta a salvarlo è l’arrivo della nuova base Apolon e dei suoi amici. Gyranic, ravvedutosi, cerca di aiutare la regina Apolon a scappare, ma questa preferisce che venga consegnato il cuore di energia a Diapolon per far rinascere la vegetazione sul pianeta. Dopo l’operazione per estrarre l’energia chiave dal petto di Takeshi, il mostro Dazaan attacca la base Apolon, ma interviene nuovamente il dio Apolon che fornisce a Takeshi nuova energia per combattere e riportare la pace. Il mostro ora viene distrutto senza difficoltà, ma il comandante Dazaan scappa su una nave spaziale portando con sé la regina Apolon in ostaggio. Gyranic, nascosto nell’astronave, costringe, pistola alla mano, il comandante a porre fine alla guerra, ma viene messo fuori combattimento da una scarica di raggi. Obbedendo alla madre, Diapolon preferisce prima azionare il cuore di energia e il sole torna a splendere sul pianeta. Gyranic dalla navicella assiste morente alla salvezza del suo pianeta. Abbagliato, il comandante Dazaan causa un corto circuito che provoca un incendio per tutta la nave, facendola esplodere. Takeshi può così riabbracciare la madre, rifugiatasi all’interno di una capsula di salvataggio, dopo aver salvato la Terra e il pianeta Dazaan.

Quasi tutti i modelli sono caratterizzati dall’uso enorme di metallo, impensabile per gli standard attuali, considerando che erano rivolti ad essere utilizzati da dei bambini…I Toys maggiormente ricercati e di valore (se completi ed in box superano tutti tranquillamente i mille euro) sono il Diapolon Dx in box singolo (che non è comunque particolarmente raro tranne i rarissimi casi mint in box) e i veicoli UFO dei protagonisti (sicuramente più rari da trovare).

UFO WARRIOR DAI APOLON – The Knight of Space Football

Produced by Eiken in 1976, the series follows Takeshi, a young orphan and American football player who discovers he is the rightful prince of the planet Apolon. Through the Key Energy tattooed on his chest, Takeshi commands the mighty Diapolon, a giant robot formed by combining three separate units: Hedda (the head), Trangu (the torso), and Legger (the legs). The series is famous for its mecha design, heavily inspired by American football gear, and for the unique “growth” process where the pilot physically expands to merge with the robot.

Merchandising was handled by the legendary BULLMARK, which created models renowned for their extraordinary weight and heavy metal content. The most iconic piece is the Diapolon DX (Gasshin), which allowed for the actual transformation and combination of the three robots. Today, these Bullmark models are among the most sought-after and expensive in the vintage market: a complete, mint-condition specimen can easily exceed one thousand euros, representing a true blue-chip investment for collectors.

Among the clouds you can see the figure of a knight on a winged steed (the god Apolon), who kidnaps Takeshi and his friends. The boys wake up in a base where they find a scientist, Labi, who reveals to Takeshi his true origin: in reality he is the Dai Apolon, son of King Apolon, ruler of the planet of the same name. Labi also explains that the sovereign was killed years before by the invading people of the Dazaan, who took possession of the energy heart. The energy heart is made up of two pieces, the absorption device and the key energy, the latter placed safely in Takeshi’s chest shortly before his father was killed, under a sun-shaped tattoo. The key energy not only activates the energy heart, but can also release a special force by exploiting solar rays, thanks to which Takeshi can take command of the powerful robot Diapolon to repel the Dazaan who also want to occupy the Earth and take back the key energy. The Diapolon is the result of the union of three minor robots: the robot Edda forms the head, Trangu the trunk and finally Legga the abdomen and legs. After the union Takeshi, thanks to the key energy, undergoes a painful process of growth of the body, assuming the same size of the Diapolon which becomes a sort of armor, in the appearance of an American football player. Diapolon’s weak point, however, is that its energy depends on the presence of solar rays. Takeshi and his friends, placed in command of support planes, thus begin a war without quarter against the Dazaan, led by Commander Gyranic, Captain Ydo and the treacherous Gumez, who are looking for the key energy. In the last episodes it is discovered that Takeshi’s mother is not dead but is a prisoner on the planet Dazaan. Labi installs in Edda a special device thanks to which Diapolon can travel in open space. After saying goodbye to his friends, Takeshi leaves for the planet Dazaan, which is discovered to be covered in a layer of gas that could deprive the robot of solar energy. Diapolon frees himself from the traps prepared to stop him and then faces a very powerful monster that puts him on the ropes, also due to the lack of solar energy. Takeshi still manages to reach his mother, but to save her the boy will have to activate a detonator device that would make the entire planet explode. Queen Apolon refuses to be saved and suggests to her son to use the heart of energy to revive vegetation on that tormented planet. Diapolon must fight again with the monster Dazaan, but this time he is saved by the arrival of the new Apolon base and his friends. Gyranic, repentant, tries to help Queen Apolon escape, but she prefers that the heart of energy be given to Diapolon to revive vegetation on the planet. After the operation to extract the key energy from Takeshi’s chest, the monster Dazaan attacks the Apolon base, but the god Apolon intervenes again and provides Takeshi with new energy to fight and restore peace. The monster is now easily destroyed, but Commander Dazaan escapes on a spaceship taking Queen Apolon hostage. Gyranic, hidden in the spaceship, forces the commander, gun in hand, to end the war, but is knocked out by a burst of rays. Obeying his mother, Diapolon prefers to activate the energy heart first and the sun shines again on the planet. Gyranic watches dying from the ship as his planet is saved. Dazzled, Commander Dazaan causes a short circuit that sets the entire ship on fire, causing it to explode. Almost all the models are characterised by the enormous use of metal, unthinkable by today’s standards, considering that they were intended to be used by children… The most sought-after and valuable Toys (if complete and in box they all easily exceed a thousand euros) are the Diapolon Dx in single box (which is not particularly rare except for the very rare mint in box cases) and the UFO vehicles of the protagonists (certainly rarer to find).
