Combattler V: Il Primo Gigante Componibile di Tadao Nagahama

Prodotto dalla Toei Animation nel 1976, Combattler V (Chodenji Robo Combattler V) è un pilastro del genere robotico. La trama vede la Terra minacciata dal popolo di Campbell: per contrastarli, il Dr. Nanbara riunisce cinque piloti che fondono i loro veicoli (Battle Jet, Battle Crusher, Battle Tank, Battle Marine e Battle Craft) nel potentissimo robot elettromagnetico Combattler V.

Nel mercato del collezionismo, i pezzi più pregiati sono le versioni prodotte da Popy. Di estrema rilevanza è la versione DX, che permette la scomposizione fedele nei 5 veicoli originali. Questo stampo è diventato leggendario anche per essere stato incluso nella prestigiosa linea Godaikin di Bandai negli anni ’80, una versione lussuosa destinata al mercato internazionale che oggi raggiunge quotazioni elevatissime. Un esemplare completo, con polistiroli intatti e tutti gli accessori, rappresenta il vertice assoluto per ogni collezionista di Chogokin e robot trasformabili.

In questa sezione di Robot Vintage, analizziamo nel dettaglio la linea Popy e Godaikin dedicata al Combattler V, con focus sui set DX, la scomposizione dei veicoli e i rari cataloghi dell’epoca.

COMBATTRA -54 PUNTATE – 1976

Nell’anno 2013, gli alieni del pianeta Campbell invadono la Terra. Per contrastare tale invasione, il professor Stevens costruisce il robotelettromagnetico Combattler. Questi è il risultato dell’unione di 5 velivoli (custoditi nella base laboratorio posta su una scogliera, la Nanbara Connection) pilotati da Roy Lambert, Furio Batler, Gonghi Kasuki, Jolly Lynch e la nipote del professore, Maggie Stevens. Ognuno dei piloti è scelto per un’abilità peculiare che lo caratterizza. Quando il professor Stevens rimane ucciso, viene rimpiazzato alla base dal professor Mirabilius, un isterico ubriacone misantropo che nei momenti difficili sfodera un’insospettabile prontezza di spirito e ingegnosità. Inizia quindi un lungo scontro tra le forze terrestri e quelle aliene guidate in prima linea dal generale Malik, accompagnato dall’assistente androide Marzia e dal vice-comandante Lucifer. Occorre notare che Marzia è innamorata di Malik, ma lui respinge il suo amore perché lei è solo una androide. Inoltre, il vero capo dell’invasione è la regina Oleana, o meglio la sua “essenza”: ella infatti, per diventare immortale, ha racchiuso la sua forza vitale in un computer che si trova in una enorme statua che la rappresenta. Malik la chiama “Madre” ed è al suo servizio. Dopo molte battaglie tra il Combattler e i mostri meccanici alieni, e dopo un duello faccia a faccia tra Roy e Malik, proprio quest’ultimo, nel tentativo di soccorrere Marzia che è rimasta gravemente danneggiata nello scontro per salvarlo, la porta nella base dove vengono costruite le armi del loro esercito e lì scopre di essere anche egli solo un androide costruito dalla regina Oleana. Malik, dopo aver rinnegato sua “Madre” e tutta la sua missione di conquista, aiuta il Combattler a distruggerla e poi i due si sfidano in un ultimo duello, che vedrà vincitore il robot terrestre. Ma la guerra non finisce così: la crudele regina del pianeta Campbell, Janera, fallito il primo tentativo di invasione della Terra decide di scendere personalmente sul pianeta e di guidare i nuovi attacchi insieme ai suoi servitori: lo scienziato Valkimer ed il generale Dunkel, che piloterà personalmente ogni nuovo robot da combattimento. Seguono dunque nuove battaglie, finché Janera, stanca dei continui fallimenti di Dunkel, gli concede un’ultima occasione: 12 ore per distruggere il Combattler, altrimenti una bomba gli disintegrerà il cranio. Nonostante l’impegno, Dunkel viene comunque sconfitto. A questo punto, la regina scaglia contro l’umanità le terribili amebe, che vengono prontamente distrutte grazie alle bombe del professore Montgomery. Oltre alle sonore sconfitte, Janera riceve la peggiore delle notizie: gli abitanti dei pianeti che controllava si sono ribellati ed hanno sconfitto i suoi eserciti. Il suo impero non esiste più, ed ora per lei conquistare la Terra è davvero l’ultima opzione perché non ha più un posto dove fare ritorno. Così, dopo aver trasformato in robot Valkimer per punirlo dei suoi fallimenti, lancia un attacco finale contro il Combattler. L’attacco fallisce e lei, infuriata, decide di distruggere la Terra lanciando un missile perforante che esploderà una volta raggiunto il nucleo del pianeta. Lanciato il missile Janera tenta di mettersi in salvo ma Valkimer, stufo della sua crudeltà, glielo impedisce ed i due muoiono insieme. Il missile procede verso il nucleo del pianeta, e gli eroi non possono fare nulla per fermarlo. Così si rassegnano alla fine del mondo, ma improvvisamente appare un Deus ex machina che annuncia che la Terra sarà salvata per intervento divino, e che non ci dovranno mai essere più guerre. Così, ripristinata la pace, i protagonisti tornano alle proprie vite.

Il merchandising Diecast della serie fu realizzato dalla ditta POPY e nella linea GODAIKIN

Linea di giocattoli diecast realizzata da Popy. Robot realizzato in varie dimensioni, la versione Deluxe è molto rara e costosa, si tratta inoltre del primo robot scomponibile realizzato. Esportato anche per il mercato americano all’interno della Linea Godaikin. Nel 1999 è stato realizzato anche un modello per la linea Soul Of Chogokin con la sigla GX03 (successivamente nel 2009 è stato realizzato anche un restyling GX50).

Hyouma Aoi (Roy)

Il leader testa calda della squadra, vestito di rosso. Hyouma è un appassionato motociclista, pilota il Battle Jet, che forma la testa di Combattler V. Perderà le braccia durante una battaglia ma gii saranno ricostruite artificiali.

Juuzou Naniwa (Furio)

secondo membro della squadra, vestito di blu. Juzo è alto e magro ed è un ottimo tiratore. Piloti Battaglia Crusher, che forma il petto e le braccia di Combattler V. Egli è l’unico membro della squadra la cui data di nascita è stat svelata: 1 Aprile 1958.

Daisaku Nishikawa (Gonghi)

Il terzo membro, vestito di marrone. Daisaku è un maestro di judo,pilota il Battle Tank, che diventa il corpo del Combattler V, ma è anche l’unico veicolo che non può volare autonomamente.

Chizuru Nanbara (Maggie)

Il quarto membro, e anche l’unico membro femminile del team, vestita di rosa. Chizuru è anche il nipote del dottor Nanbara. Pilota il Battle Marine, che diventa le gambe del Combattler V. Alla fine della storia si innamora di Hyouma.

Kosuke Kita (Jolly)

Il quinto membro, vestito di verde. Kosuke è un genio bambino e inventore. Pilota il Battle Crush, che diventa i piedi del Combattler V.

Professor Yotsuya

assume la gestione della base Nanbara. Un ubriacone e misantropo, tuttavia promette di difendere la terra dagli invasori alieni.

Malik

Il leader degli extraterrestri invasori, sovrintende alle tattiche di guerra per la conquista della Terra. E’ in grado di cambiare il suo aspetto a piacimento con la pelle blu, i capelli biondi o l’aspetto di un’aquila umanoide.

Kyuusoku Ku Shirei Miia (Marzia)

Androide assistente di Garuda. E’ segretamente innamorata di Garuda, che però è ignaro dei suoi sentimenti. Per salvare Garuda si sacrifica pilotando un demone bestia lanciandolo contro il Combattler V.

Combattler V: Tadao Nagahama’s First Combining Giant

Produced by Toei Animation in 1976, Combattler V is a cornerstone of the mecha genre. The story follows the Earth under threat from the Campbellian aliens: to counter them, Dr. Nanbara recruits five pilots who merge their specialized vehicles (Battle Jet, Battle Crusher, Battle Tank, Battle Marine, and Battle Craft) into the mighty electromagnetic robot Combattler V.

The vintage toy market is led by Popy’s historic productions. The most sought-after version is the DX model, famous for its ability to split into the 5 original Battle Machines. This specific mold gained legendary status when it was released under Bandai’s premium Godaikin line in the 1980s. The Godaikin version, intended for the international market, is now one of the most expensive and iconic pieces for collectors. Finding a complete unit with original foams and all accessories is the ultimate goal for high-end diecast enthusiasts.

COMBATTRA -54 EPISODE- 1976

In the year 2013, aliens from the planet Campbell invade Earth. To counter this invasion, Professor Stevens builds the electromagnetic robot Combattler. This is the result of the union of 5 aircraft (kept in the laboratory base located on a cliff, the Nanbara Connection) piloted by Roy Lambert, Furio Batler, Gonghi Kasuki, Jolly Lynch and the professor’s niece, Maggie Stevens. Each of the pilots is chosen for a peculiar ability that characterizes him. When Professor Stevens is killed, he is replaced at the base by Professor Mirabilius, a hysterical misanthropic drunkard who in difficult moments shows an unsuspected presence of mind and ingenuity. Thus begins a long clash between the terrestrial forces and the alien ones led on the front line by General Malik, accompanied by the android assistant Marzia and the vice-commander Lucifer. It should be noted that Marzia is in love with Malik, but he rejects her love because she is only an android. Furthermore, the real leader of the invasion is Queen Oleana, or rather her “essence”: in fact, to become immortal, she has enclosed her life force in a computer that is in a huge statue that represents her. Malik calls her “Mother” and is at her service. After many battles between the Combattler and the alien mechanical monsters, and after a face-to-face duel between Roy and Malik, the latter, in an attempt to rescue Marzia who was seriously damaged in the fight to save him, takes her to the base where the weapons of their army are built and there he discovers that he too is just an android built by Queen Oleana. Malik, after having denied his “Mother” and his entire mission of conquest, helps the Combattler to destroy her and then the two challenge each other in a final duel, which will see the Earth robot win. But the war does not end there: the cruel queen of the planet Campbell, Janera, after the first failed attempt to invade Earth, decides to personally descend on the planet and lead the new attacks together with her servants: the scientist Valkimer and General Dunkel, who will personally pilot each new combat robot. New battles follow, until Janera, tired of Dunkel’s continuous failures, grants him one last chance: 12 hours to destroy the Combattler, otherwise a bomb will disintegrate his skull. Despite his efforts, Dunkel is still defeated. At this point, the queen unleashes the terrible amoebas against humanity, which are promptly destroyed thanks to Professor Montgomery’s bombs. In addition to the resounding defeats, Janera receives the worst news: the inhabitants of the planets she controlled have rebelled and defeated her armies. Her empire no longer exists, and now for her conquering the Earth is truly the last option because she no longer has a place to return to. So, after having transformed Valkimer into a robot to punish him for his failures, she launches a final attack against the Combattler. The attack fails and she, enraged, decides to destroy the Earth by launching a piercing missile that will explode once it reaches the planet’s core. Once the missile is launched, Janera tries to save herself but Valkimer, fed up with her cruelty, prevents her and the two die together. The missile proceeds towards the planet’s core, and the heroes can do nothing to stop it. So they resign themselves to the end of the world, but suddenly a Deus ex machina appears and announces that the Earth will be saved by divine intervention, and that there must never be any more wars. Thus, with peace restored, the protagonists return to their lives.

The Diecast merchandising of the series was made by the POPY and in the GODAIKIN line

Hyouma Aoi (Roy)

The hot-headed leader of the team, dressed in red. Hyouma is an avid motorcyclist, piloting the Battle Jet, which forms the head of Combattler V. He will lose his arms during a battle but will be rebuilt artificially.

Juuzou Naniwa (Furio)

second member of the team, dressed in blue. Juzo is tall and thin and is an excellent marksman. He pilots Battle Crusher, which forms the chest and arms of Combattler V. He is the only member of the team whose birth date has been revealed: April 1, 1958.

Daisaku Nishikawa (Gonghi)

The third member, dressed in brown. Daisaku is a judo master, pilots the Battle Tank, which becomes the body of the Combattler V, but is also the only vehicle that cannot fly autonomously.

Chizuru Nanbara (Maggie)

The fourth member, and also the only female member of the team, dressed in pink. Chizuru is also the granddaughter of Dr. Nanbara. She pilots the Battle Marine, which becomes the legs of the Combattler V. At the end of the story she falls in love with Hyouma.

Kosuke Kita (Jolly)

The fifth member, dressed in green. Kosuke is a child genius and inventor. He pilots the Battle Crush, which becomes the feet of the Combattler V.

Professor Yotsuya

takes over the Nanbara base. A drunkard and misanthrope, he nevertheless promises to defend the earth from alien invaders.

Malik

The leader of the alien invaders, he oversees the war tactics for the conquest of Earth. He is able to change his appearance at will with blue skin, blond hair or the appearance of a humanoid eagle.

Kyuusoku Ku Shirei Miia (Marzia)

Garuda’s android assistant. She is secretly in love with Garuda, but he is unaware of her feelings. To save Garuda, she sacrifices herself by piloting a demon beast and throwing it at the Combattler V.
