Il Grande Mazinga: L’Evoluzione del Mito

Il Grande Mazinga (Great Mazinger), serie in 109 puntate del 1974, rappresenta il capitolo più oscuro e battagliero della saga nagaiana. Sotto la minaccia dei Mikenes e del Generale Nero, il dottor Kenzo Kabuto rivela il successore di Mazinga Z. Pilotato da Tetsuya Tsurugi, un orfano addestrato fin dall’infanzia, il Grande Mazinga combatte insieme a Jun Hono (Venus Alfa) e allo sgangherato Boss Robot per salvare l’umanità dall’antico popolo dei Micenei.

L’archivio di Robot Vintage documenta la leggendaria produzione Popy. Il cuore della sezione è il GA-05 Great Mazinger, analizzato in tutte le sue varianti, inclusa la rara prima versione. Tra i pezzi più ricercati figurano il Junior Robot GA-06 e l’imponente Fortezza delle Scienze PA-34. Completano la rassegna i veicoli della linea Popinica come il Brain Condor PA-36, la Jet Bike PA-37 e la Regina delle Stelle PA-38, offrendo un quadro completo del merchandising diecast dell’epoca.

La serie ha praticamente inizio da dove terminava quella di Mazinga Z che si concludeva con una puntata dove il Grande Mazinga veniva in aiuto di quest’ultimo. Esiste inoltre un lungometraggio che fa da ponte tra le due serie (Mazinga Z contro il Generale Nero). La Terra è sotto la minaccia dei Mikenes, ovvero l’antico popolo greco dei Micenei, che un cataclisma aveva costretto a rifugiarsi per millenni nelle viscere del pianeta, affidando la loro sopravvivenza a un sole artificiale. Per questo motivo i loro corpi diventano deboli e malati ed essi devono trasformarsi in cyborg per sopravvivere. In età recente, un gruppo di ufficiali guidati dal Generale Nero, che hanno convertito i propri corpi in quelli di giganteschi automi, si impadronisce con la forza del regno e ne trasforma la popolazione, parte in anonimi soldati robot (tra questi anche il loro monarca, principe Kerubinus, che viene imprigionato) e parte in mostri da combattimento, con l’evidente scopo di iniziare una guerra di conquista. Il Grande Mazinga è stato fatto costruire segretamente da Kenzo Kabuto, figlio di Juzo Kabuto (creatore di Mazinga Z) e padre di Shiro e Koji Kabuto (pilota di Mazinga Z), che affronta con inusitata energia i mostri mikenes e riesce ad abbatterli.

I Diecast della serie sono ad oggi tutti molto ricercati, tra questi i più rari e costosi sono il Ga06 Jounior Robot e la Base del Grande Mazinga. Il Grande Mazinga è abbastanza comune da trovare, ne esistono molte versioni in quanto è stato esportato anche nella linea Shogun Warriors, la prima versione Popy è la più rara da trovare ed molto costosa.

GREAT MAZINGER

Progettato dal professor Kabuto è un evoluzione molto più potente del Mazinga Z del quale prende il posto nella lotta contro Micene quando stava per essere sconfitto. Dispone di armi simili a quelle del Mazinga ma molto più potenti ed devastanti.

Brain Condor: jet pilotato da Tetsuya che,
si incastra nella testa del Mazinga, permettendo al pilota di prendere i comandi del robot.

Tetsuya

Tetsuya è un giovane orfano dal carattere inquieto e solitario; questo è dovuto al fatto che, fin dall’infanzia, il professor Kenzo Kabuto lo ha adottato per addestrarlo alla guida del Grande Mazinga: Tetsuya non ha avuto compagni di giochi o un’istruzione normale, ma ha dedicato tutta la sua vita al fine di pilotare il robot in battaglia.

Jun

Jun, come narrato in un episodio, è figlia di una donna giapponese e di un nero,un infrequente ma interessante incrocio che le conferisce carnagione scura unita a tratti asiatici. Jun è esperta di arti marziali e pilota una veloce motocicletta.

Kenzo Kabuto

Capo della Fortezza delle Scienze, l’istituto scientifico che funge da base operativa per il Grande Mazinga. Kenzo è il padre di Koji Kabuto, pilota di Mazinga Z e del piccolo Shiro, il quale scopre l’identità del padre solo nel corso della storia.

Shiro Kabuto

Shiro è il secondogenito di Kenzo Kabuto e fratello minore di Koji, pilota di Mazinga Z. Ha un ruolo dominante in diverse puntate e in qualche occasione pilota un robot tutto suo, Junior Robot.

Boss

È un bullo, ma di buoni sentimenti, innamorato follemente di Sayaka in Mazinga Z e di Jun nel Grande Mazinga e per questo è in perenne rivalità sia con Koji che con Tetsuya, anche se prova per loro una grande amicizia, soprattutto per Koji. Pilota lo sgangherato Boss Robot

Nuke e Mucha

Sono gli aiutanti di Boss, da cui vengono trattati malissimo ed a volte addirittura sfruttati e costretti ai lavori più umili e pesanti

Imperatore delle Tenebre

Supremo capo dei Mikenes, viene rappresentato come un gigantesco essere fiammeggiante, di cui si intravedono solo due occhi rossi e una sorta di ghigno malefico, si tratta in reltà di un cervello collegato a un gruppo di organi, col cuore contenuto dentro una teca: la figura fiammeggiante dove si impersonifica altro non è che una massa di energia controllata da lui a distanza.

Generale Nero

Comandante in capo delle forze di invasione di Mikene, Morirà dopo un epico combattimento contro Grande Mazinga durante il quale anche Tetsuya dovrà riconoscere il suo valore di guerriero.

Ministro Argos

Pianifica le missioni per la conquista della Terra, è in perenne competizione con il Generale Nero per ottenere più potere da parte dell’imperatore

Rimpiazza il Generale Nero quando viene sconfitto dal Grande Mazinga per guidare le sette armate di Mikene. Incorpora il redivivo Dottor Inferno

The series basically starts where Mazinger Z ended, which ended with an episode where Great Mazinger came to the aid of the latter. There is also a feature film that acts as a bridge between the two series (Mazinger Z against General Black). The Earth is under threat from the Mikenes, the ancient Greek people of the Mycenaeans, who a cataclysm had forced to take refuge for millennia in the bowels of the planet, entrusting their survival to an artificial sun. For this reason, their bodies become weak and sick and they must transform into cyborgs to survive. In recent times, a group of officers led by General Nero, who have converted their bodies into those of gigantic automatons, takes over the kingdom by force and transforms its population, partly into anonymous robot soldiers (among them also their monarch, Prince Kerubinus, who is imprisoned) and partly into fighting monsters, with the obvious aim of starting a war of conquest. Great Mazinger was secretly built by Kenzo Kabuto, son of Juzo Kabuto (creator of Mazinger Z) and father of Shiro and Koji Kabuto (pilot of Mazinger Z), who faces the mikenes monsters with unusual energy and manages to defeat them.

The Diecasts of the series are all highly sought after today, among these the rarest and most expensive are the Ga06 Jounior Robot and the Great Mazinger Base. The Great Mazinger is quite common to find, there are many versions as it was also exported in the Shogun Warriors line, the first Popy version is the rarest to find and very expensive.

GREAT MAZINGER

Designed by Professor Kabuto, it is a much more powerful evolution of Mazinger Z, which it replaces in the fight against Mycenae when it was about to be defeated. It has weapons similar to those of Mazinger but much more powerful and devastating.

TETSUYA MOTORCYCLE: it is the protagonist’s motorbike and is characterised by the presence of 2 lateral missiles in the shape of Great Mazinger’s fist.

JUNIOR ROBO: Robot built by Dr. Kabuto and piloted by Shiro, it is not particularly powerful and therefore mostly useless in battle.

QUEEN COSMOS: Ship piloted by Jun Hono that attaches itself to the head of the Venus Alpha robot, allowing it to take control of it.

Tetsuya

Tetsuya is a young orphan with a restless and solitary character; this is due to the fact that, since childhood, Professor Kenzo Kabuto adopted him to train him to drive the Great Mazinger: Tetsuya had no playmates or a normal education, but dedicated his entire life to piloting the robot in battle.

Jun

Jun, as told in one episode, is the daughter of a Japanese woman and a black man, an uncommon but interesting mix that gives her a dark complexion combined with Asian features. Jun is an expert in martial arts and pilots a fast motorcycle.

Kenzo Kabuto

Head of the Fortress of Science, the scientific institute that serves as the base of operations for Great Mazinger. Kenzo is the father of Koji Kabuto, pilot of Mazinger Z, and of the little Shiro, who discovers the identity of his father only during the story.

Shiro Kabuto

Shiro is the second son of Kenzo Kabuto and younger brother of Koji, pilot of Mazinger Z. He has a dominant role in several episodes and on some occasions pilots his own robot, Junior Robot.

Boss

He is a bully, but with good feelings, madly in love with Sayaka in Mazinger Z and with Jun in Great Mazinger and for this reason he is in constant rivalry with both Koji and Tetsuya, even if he feels a great friendship for them, especially for Koji. He pilots the rickety Boss Robot

Nuke e Mucha

They are Boss’s assistants, who treat them very badly and sometimes even exploit them and force them to do the most menial and heavy work.

Emperor of Darkness

Supreme leader of the Mikenes, he is represented as a gigantic flaming being, of which only two red eyes and a sort of evil grin can be seen. In reality, it is a brain connected to a group of organs, with the heart contained inside a case: the flaming figure in which he impersonates is nothing more than a mass of energy controlled by him from a distance.

General Black

Commander in chief of the Mikene invasion forces, he will die after an epic fight against Great Mazinger during which even Tetsuya will have to recognize his value as a warrior.
