Fantaman: Il Guerriero della Giustizia
Fantaman (Ogon Bat) è il primo vero supereroe della storia giapponese. La sua origine è leggendaria: nasce nel 1930 come protagonista del Kamishibai, il tradizionale teatro di carta itinerante dove i narratori raccontavano storie nelle piazze utilizzando tavole illustrate. Molto prima dei manga moderni e dell’animazione televisiva, Fantaman era già un’icona popolare consolidata.
La trama della serie animata del 1967 segue le vicende della giovane Maria e del Dottor Steele che, naufraghi sull’isola di Atlantide dopo un attacco del Dottor Zero, risvegliano dal suo sonno millenario all’interno di un antico sarcofago il guerriero dal teschio dorato. Caratterizzato da un corpo muscoloso, un mantello nero e una risata tonante, Fantaman accorre ogni volta che Maria lo invoca, preceduto dal volo di un pipistrello d’oro, per sconfiggere le forze del male.
Il merchandising diecast di Fantaman è stato prodotto dalla Popy all’interno della celebre Meisaku Serie (Serie dei Personaggi Famosi). Il modello, identificato dal codice GA65, celebra l’importanza storica di questo personaggio. La linea Meisaku, composta da 13 modelli commemorativi, è nata proprio per rendere omaggio alle icone che hanno gettato le basi dell’immaginario eroico giapponese. Per i collezionisti, il GA65 è un oggetto vintage estremamente ricercato, rappresentando un tributo a un eroe che ha attraversato quasi un secolo di storia, dalle piazze del Giappone agli schermi di tutto il mondo.

| FANTAMAN -52 PUNTATE – 1962 |
Il celebre archeologo Dottor Corallo conduce una spedizione di ricerca che giunge fino a toccar l’Antartide; errore questo che si rivelerà per lui fatale, in quanto tutto ad un tratto emerge dal mare una strana creatura robotica che affonda in breve tempo la nave su cui viaggiava. Di tutto l’equipaggio l’unica a sopravvivere sarà la giovane figlia del professore, Maria (che nell’originale giapponese è presentata come di nazionalità italiana), la quale verrà soccorsa e portata in salvo dal Dottor Steele (membro di rilievo della comunità scientifica internazionale), che transitava proprio in quel momento nella zona per collaudare una delle sue ultime invenzioni, l’ipermacchina, una sorta di disco volante.Nel corso della loro fuga, a corto d’acqua dolce necessaria per il buon funzionamento dei motori dell’ipermacchina, i nostri eroi atterrano casualmente nella perduta isola di Atlantide, tornata da poco in superficie a causa di un’improvvisa eruzione vulcanica. Si mettono subito alla ricerca del prezioso liquido, ma neppure qui si trovano al sicuro e vengono nuovamente attaccati da un mostro a forma di mano gigante creato da Zero. Fuggendo seguono antichi ideogrammi che solo in parte riescono ad essere tradotti da Maria e che li conducono ad un sepolcro antichissimo. I geroglifici lì incisi dicono che ogni 10mila anni un grande male giunge a minacciare la Terra, ed è proprio allora che risulta indispensabile richiamar alla vita il guerriero celato all’interno della bara, in quanto solo lui lo può definitivamente sconfiggere. Credendo di attivare un qualche genere di meccanismo, versano delle gocce d’acqua all’interno del sarcofago, riportando così alla vita Fantaman, l’eroe della giustizia: egli è il terrore dei criminali dell’antichità, e d’ora in avanti proteggerà il gruppo di Maria ed il mondo intero dalle mire diaboliche del dottor Zero e del suo perfido aiutante Gorgo. Ogni qualvolta si troveranno in pericolo o difficoltà, a Maria è affidato il compito d’implorare l’aiuto di Fantaman, il quale apparirà sempre preceduto da un pipistrello d’oro e da una grande risata. |

Fantaman: The Hero of Justice
Fantaman (Ogon Bat) is the first true superhero in Japanese history. His origin is legendary: he was created in 1930 as the protagonist of Kamishibai, the traditional itinerant paper theater where storytellers shared tales in public squares using illustrated boards. Long before the rise of modern manga and television animation, Fantaman was already a firmly established popular icon.
The 1967 animated series plot follows young Maria and Dr. Steele who, shipwrecked on the island of Atlantis after an attack by Dr. Zero, awaken the golden-skulled warrior from his thousand-year slumber within an ancient sarcophagus. Featuring a muscular body, a black cloak, and a thundering laugh, Fantaman rushes to help whenever Maria summons him, preceded by the flight of a golden bat, to defeat the forces of evil.
The diecast merchandising for Fantaman was produced by Popy as part of the famous Meisaku Serie (Famous Characters Series). The famous archaeologist Doctor Coral leads a research expedition that reaches as far as Antarctica; this error will prove fatal for him, as all of a sudden a strange robotic creature emerges from the sea and quickly sinks the ship on which he was traveling. Of the entire crew, the only one to survive will be the professor’s young daughter, Maria (who in the original Japanese is presented as being of Italian nationality), who will be rescued and brought to safety by Doctor Steele (a prominent member of the international scientific community), who was passing through the area at that moment to test one of his latest inventions, the hypermachine, a sort of flying saucer. During their escape, short of fresh water necessary for the proper functioning of the hypermachine’s engines, our heroes accidentally land on the lost island of Atlantis, recently returned to the surface due to a sudden volcanic eruption. They immediately set out to find the precious liquid, but they are not safe here either and are attacked again by a giant hand-shaped monster created by Zero. While fleeing, they follow ancient ideograms that Maria can only partially translate and that lead them to an ancient tomb. The hieroglyphics engraved there say that every 10,000 years a great evil comes to threaten the Earth, and it is precisely then that it is essential to bring the warrior hidden inside the coffin back to life, as only he can definitively defeat it. Believing to activate some kind of mechanism, they pour drops of water inside the sarcophagus, thus bringing Fantaman, the hero of justice, back to life: he is the terror of the criminals of antiquity, and from now on he will protect Maria’s group and the entire world from the diabolical aims of Dr. Zero and his evil assistant Gorgo. Whenever they find themselves in danger or difficulty, Maria is entrusted with the task of imploring the help of Fantaman, who will always appear preceded by a golden bat and a big laugh. |
