Mazinger Z: Il Primo Gigante di Metallo

La storia narra di un enorme robot costruito dall’anziano scienziato Juzo Kabuto e lasciato in eredità, alla sua morte, al nipote Koji Kabuto. L’automa ha il compito di contrastare i piani del Dottor Inferno, uno scienziato malvagio che mira alla conquista del mondo grazie a un esercito di mostri meccanici rinvenuti nell’isola di Rodi. Alimentato dall’energia fotoatomica e costruito nella resistentissima Lega Z, Mazinger Z combatte affiancato dal robot femminile Afrodite A e dal bizzarro Boss Robot.

Il merchandising diecast di Mazinger Z rappresenta l’origine stessa del collezionismo robotico. Prodotto originariamente da Popy, il modello GA-01 è il primo robot in metallo pressofuso della storia, capostipite della fortunata linea Chogokin. L’archivio di Robot Vintage documenta l’evoluzione di questi giocattoli, dai primi rari modelli vintage fino alla moderna e celebre linea Soul of Chogokin di Bandai. Pezzi come l’Hover Pilder (PA-05) e la moto di Koji (PA-12) rimangono tra i più ambiti e costosi per i collezionisti di tutto il mondo.


MAZINGA – 91 PUNTATE – 1972
La storia narra di un enorme robot costruito dall’anziano scienziato Juzo Kabuto e lasciato in eredità, alla sua morte, al nipote adolescente Koji Kabuto (in Italia Ryo in questa serie, poi Koji nel Grande Mazinga e poi Alcor in Goldrake). Compito dell’automa sarebbe stato quello di contrastare i piani del Dottor Inferno (in Italia Dottor Inferno in Mazinga Z e poi Dr Hell nel Grande Mazinga e Mazinkaiser), uno scienziato tedesco che nel 1962 aveva partecipato con Kabuto e altri colleghi a una spedizione archeologica nell’isola greca di Bardos (Rodi nell’adattamento italiano), alla scoperta dei resti dell’antica civiltà micenea. Ritrovato l’esercito di mostri meccanici costruiti dai Micenei (Mikenes in originale), il dottor Hell svelava le sue reali intenzioni uccidendo tutti i presenti (tranne Kabuto, che riuscì a fuggire) e impossessandosi dell’antica tecnologia, con lo scopo di far tornare sulla terra i discendenti dell’antico popolo greco (costretti per secoli a rifugiarsi nelle viscere della Terra) e insieme ad essi dominare entro pochi anni il mondo. Il Professor Kabuto tornato in patria dirige il centro ricerche per l’Energia Fotoatomica, per lasciarlo al professor Yumi appena scoperta una lega metallica resistentissima, la lega Z, e andare a costruire altrove Mazinga Z. Nell’Istituto viene creata Afrodite A, un robot meno potente, dalle fattezze femminili, costruito dal Professor Yumi e pilotato da Sayaka Yumi, giovanissima figlia del direttore dell’istituto. Più avanti si unisce a questi il Boss Robot (che Koji nell’originale giapponese prende in giro, chiamandolo col gioco di parole Borot, sinonimo di ferraglia), guidato da Boss, Nuke e Mucha, compagni di scuola di Koji, le cui imprese costituiscono il lato comico della serie. Nell’episodio 91 della serie i contendenti si affrontano in un grande scontro finale dove il Conte ed Hell trovano la morte.

Mazinga Z rimane uno dei successi più duraturi di Go Nagai, generando moltissimi prodotti di merchandising , dai kit in plastica a giocattoli in metallo pressofuso in passato copyright delle Popy e poi ripresi nell’ormai famosissima linea Soul of Chogokin linea. Essendo il primo modello di un robot prodotto in metallo pressofuso il valore di una prima versione è elevatissimo. Molto costosa anche la moto di Koji.

MAZINGA Z

Mazinga Z è un enorme robot , costruito con un metallo fittizio chiamato Lega Z forgiato da un nuovo elemento ( Japanium ) estratto da una miniera che si trova solo alle basi del Monte Fuji, in Giappone . Il robotè stato costruito dal professor Juzo Kabuto come arma segreta contro le forze del male guidate dal malefico dott. Inferno.

Kabuto Koji

Figlio del professor Kenzo Kabuto e fratello maggiore di Shiro, studente di liceo con una grande passione per le motociclette, a soli 16 anni viene posto alla guida del Mazinga Z,Dopo due anni di guerra sconfigge il dottor Inferno, ma sconfitto a sua volta dai nemici della Terra, le Sette Armate di Mikenes che si nascondevano dietro Inferno, va negli Stati Uniti per compiere delle ricerche di ingegneria aerospaziale alla NASA, lasciando il campo al Grande Mazinga costruito dal padre e pilotato da Tetsuya Tsurugi.

Sayaka

Giovane dai capelli castani lunghi figlia del professor Yumi, pilota il robot dalle fattezze femminili (Afrodite A e Diana A dopo la distruzione del primo) che aiuta Mazinga. Cerca di nascondere l’interesse che prova nei confronti di Ryo bisticciando spesso con lui; il suo carattere si dimostra esser a volte anche abbastanza infantile e testardo, ma durante la battaglia è indubitabile il suo coraggio e valore.

Boss

Boss è una specie di bullo e capobanda un po’ troppo cresciuto, è in costante competizione con Ryo per attrarre l’attenzione di Sayaka. Grande, grosso ed iracondo ma anche abbastanza imbranato, seppur dimostrando la sua parte di valore pilotando il “Boss Robot”. Comanda a bacchetta Nuke e Mucha ed è perseguitato da una terribile cornacchia che non perde mai l’occasione per divertirsi alle sue spalle.

Dr. Yumi

Responsabile e capo direttivo al “centro di ricerche per l’energia fotoatomica”, la quale è anche la base segreta di Mazinga. Successore di Juzo, il nonno di Ryo, negli studi scientifici da lui intrapresi; è il padre di Sayaka, per la quale ha realizzato il robot complementare di Mazinga Z, ovvero Afrodite A.

Proferssor Hell

Ex collega di Juzo, è uno scienziato che vuole conquistare e dominare il mondo intero e a tal fine cerca in tutti i modi di annientare Mazinga utilizzando i suoi innumerevoli “mostri meccanici”. Riapparirà in Grande Mazinga come Gran Maresciallo delle tenebre.

Barone Ashura

Il più importante tra i collaboratori di Inferno, è stato da lui creato attraverso la fusione di due mummie dell’antico impero di Mikene. Ha un corpo ermafrodita, per metà maschile e metà femminile; si trova a capo delle maschere di ferro ed è un acerrimo rivale di Blocken, con cui compete costantemente. Morirà in un attacco suicida contro Mazinga.

Conte Blocken

Si tratta di un ex militare nazista, salvato da Inferno dopo essersi trovato in fin di vita a seguito di una terribile battaglia durante la seconda guerra mondiale: il risultato è un corpo bionico con la testa separata che può avere vita autonoma. Comanda l’esercito degli elmetti di ferro; anche lui soccomberà verso la fine durante uno scontro contro Mazinga.

Granduca Gordon

Compare nella seconda metà della serie in qualità di rappresentante del redivivo impero di Mikene. Si tratta di un essere simile a un centauro, con busto umano che poggia su una tigre dai denti a sciabola gialla striata di nero.

Mazinger Z: The First Metal Giant

The story tells of a massive robot built by the elderly scientist Juzo Kabuto and bequeathed, upon his death, to his grandson Koji Kabuto. The automaton is tasked with thwarting the plans of Doctor Inferno, an evil scientist aiming for world conquest using an army of mechanical monsters discovered on the island of Rhodes. Powered by photoatomic energy and constructed from the ultra-durable Alloy Z, Mazinger Z fights alongside the female robot Aphrodite A and the bizarre Boss Robot.

The diecast merchandising for Mazinger Z represents the very origin of robot collecting. Originally produced by Popy, the GA-01 model was the first diecast metal robot in history, the forefather of the successful Chogokin line. The Robot Vintage archive documents the evolution of these toys, from the first rare vintage models to Bandai’s famous modern Soul of Chogokin line. Mazinger Z remains one of Go Nagai’s most enduring successes, spawning a slew of merchandise, from plastic kits to die-cast metal toys formerly copyrighted by Popy and later revived in the now-famous Soul of Chogokin line. Being the first model of a robot produced in die-cast metal, the value of an early version is extremely high. Koji’s motorbike is also very expensive.

MAZINGER Z

Mazinger Z is a massive robot, constructed from a fictional metal called Alloy Z forged from a new element (Japanium) mined from a mine found only at the base of Mount Fuji, Japan. The robot was built by Professor Juzo Kabuto as a secret weapon against the forces of evil led by the evil Dr. Heatblast.

Kabuto Koji

Son of Professor Kenzo Kabuto and older brother of Shiro, a high school student with a great passion for motorcycles, at just 16 years old he was placed at the helm of Mazinger Z. After two years of war he defeated Doctor Inferno, but defeated in turn by the enemies of the Earth, the Seven Armies of Mikenes who were hiding behind Inferno, he went to the United States to carry out aerospace engineering research at NASA, leaving the field to Great Mazinger built by his father and piloted by Tetsuya Tsurugi.

Sayaka

Young girl with long brown hair, daughter of Professor Yumi, pilots the robot with female features (Aphrodite A and Diana A after the destruction of the first) that helps Mazinger. She tries to hide her interest in Ryo by often arguing with him; her character is sometimes shown to be quite childish and stubborn, but during the battle her courage and value are unquestionable.

Boss

Boss is a kind of bully and a slightly overgrown gang leader, he is in constant competition with Ryo to attract Sayaka’s attention. Big, fat and irascible but also quite clumsy, although he demonstrates his share of value by piloting the “Boss Robot”. He commands Nuke and Mucha with a rod and is persecuted by a terrible crow that never misses an opportunity to have fun at his expense.

Dr. Yumi

Head and chief executive of the “Photoatomic Energy Research Center”, which is also the secret base of Mazinger. Successor of Juzo, Ryo’s grandfather, in the scientific studies he undertook; he is the father of Sayaka, for whom he created the complementary robot of Mazinger Z, namely Aphrodite A.

Proferssor Hell

Juzo’s former colleague, he is a scientist who wants to conquer and dominate the entire world and to this end he tries in every way to annihilate Mazinger using his countless “mechanical monsters”. He will reappear in Great Mazinger as the Grand Marshal of Darkness.

Barone Ashura

The most important of Inferno’s collaborators, he was created by him through the fusion of two mummies from the ancient empire of Mikene. He has a hermaphroditic body, half male and half female; he is the leader of the iron masks and is a bitter rival of Blocken, with whom he constantly competes. He will die in a suicide attack against Mazinger.

Conte Blocken

He is a former Nazi soldier, saved by Inferno after being on the verge of death following a terrible battle during the Second World War: the result is a bionic body with a separated head that can have an autonomous life. He commands the army of the iron helmets; he too will succumb towards the end during a fight against Mazinger.

Granduke Gordon

He appears in the second half of the series as a representative of the revived Mikene empire. He is a centaur-like being with a human torso that rests on a yellow saber-toothed tiger striped with black.
